Pattaya Elephant Village

They have fought for the nation, worked in the forests and provided employment for people who wish to sell you a bag of bananas for 20 baht. There aren’t many opportunities to see elephants in their natural environment in Pattaya, unless you head to the city’s own Elephant Village.

Ko Larn Island

Ko Larn is a fairly remarkable island. Being so close to Pattaya you'd expect it to be a centre for commercialism, replete with 7-elevens, guesthouses and the like. But despite being the nearest island to Pattaya, it's remarkably undeveloped, and that's one of the reasons why so many tourists seek out its shores.

Nightlife

Nightclubs/Discos

IT’S a devil of a job not to love this place. Pumping hip hop mixed with r’n’b makes Lucifer’s one of the hottest spots in Pattaya. Massive speakers dwarf many of the Thai ladies jigging away alongside them, and Satanic decorations give the club an edge. Lucifer’s is cleverly divided into two parts, each with its distinct clientele.

YOU don’t mind paying a cover charge when the cocktails are this good. A 200 baht entry fee may seem a bit steep, but it does include a choice of one cocktail from quite a tempting list. My whisky sour had a good share of whisky in, and my friend’s Margarita was equally potent.

Beer Bars

INGREDIENTS for a successful beer bar: subscribe to a sports channel, hire a live band, employ an array of cute-looking waitresses and hold a happy hour that lasts nearly all day. We Are the World knows what it has to do to bring in punters, and it does it well.

NESTLED in between tailors’ shops and Russian restaurants sits Barracuda, a welcoming, laid-back beer bar. It’s a reassuringly honest, walk-in place where a central C-shaped bar is the dominant feature, or maybe it’s the girls who wait the other side of it.

YOU know the feeling. You’ve just necked your sixth bottle of Heineken and the night’s looking good. You go to get up, and can’t understand why the ground is moving beneath you. Has a second tsunami taken hold, is another Krakatoa underway, or should you have maybe had a bigger dinner to soak up all the booze?

ONE of the undoubted highlights of Walking Street is the opportunity to watch all kinds of human life go by. From one-armed fortune tellers to women who used to be men, it’s never dull. Moonlight offers the perfect place for such voyeurism as you can pull up a chair and simply watch life go by.

THE girl in the black top started dancing close (very close) to one of her friends, and pretty soon all the waitresses were hot-stepping around the bar. It doesn’t take much for the girls at Five Star to dance. Theirs may be a small bar, but it stands out.

WEIRD name, but a great vibe. Hot Tuna is one of the largest bars in Walking Street, and has the lot: pool tables, TV, girls, and live music. From the outside it appears to be a giant warehouse, a bare, black, bar, with lots of space. Inside, there’s a main bar, where flirtatious girls are happy to play bar games.

IN the middle of the infamous Walking Street, a gaggle of girls stand outside calling to tourists. The offer of cheap draft beer and more female attraction is enough to entice many a tourist inside one of Pattaya’s smallest, but busiest, go go bars.

The Drum and Monkey is an English pub with English drinkers. There may be a few international flags pinned to the ceiling, but when you come in here there’s everything but mashed potatoes to make you feel at home.

Nightlife Reviews

Despite all the headlines about sex and debauchery, there is another side to Pattaya. In recent years it’s developed a reputation for world-class restaurants, shows and entertainment. So whether you want to play Connect 4, munch on fresh lobster or watch a cabaret, Pattaya has the lot.

Where to Sleep

There are nearly as many guesthouses in Pattaya as there are beer bars – and that’s saying something. From five-star luxury resorts to humble rooms with a mattress and little else, Pattaya has a wide choice of places to rest your head. There are few true budget spots and most rooms start from at least 500 baht. Look down some of the sidestreets though and you could snag a room for 200 baht.

Eating Out Reviews

Pattaya has one of the best range of eating options in Thailand. From fiery curries to exotic fruits to fresh seafood, you are never more than a few metres away from a meal. Food fans on a budget can pick at prawns from a deckchair while serious eaters can choose from many high-end restaurants serving Thai and international cuisine.
