The two guys who stand outside Zaika trying to persuade me to come in had always put me off going in. However, a friend who knows a thing about cooking told me to check out Zaika, and I’m glad he did.
This two-floored Indian restaurant is one of the brightest and busiest Indian eateries in Pattaya. The menu is extensive, covering all the classic Indian dishes and adding a few house specials. Among the dishes that caught our eye were the tawa masala (fresh cottage cheese marinated in yoghurt with cuts of meat), the vindaloos and the vegetarian options.
The restaurant was filled with, mainly, Indian customers – a good sign. Service was pretty swift and the order came within 20 minutes.
We went for the rogan josh, which was superbly cooked, not remotely oily. Best of all, there was a whole pot of it. The big chunks of lamb were tender and tasted great after having been wrapped in garlic nam bread.
The upstairs area is a little quieter and has views down to the ground floor. If you are sitting near the door, you can also consider the plans for the following day, as there’s a travel agent office stuck on to that corner of the restaurant. Elsewhere in the restaurant the soft yellow tones and Indian artwork, along with some Indian TV to give the place an even more authentic feel.
As Indians go, it’s one of the better ones we’ve had in Pattaya, with delicate flavours, good-sized portions and knowledgeable staff.
