We were a little sceptical upon entering the Royal Palace Hotel in Pattaya. After all, agoda's visitors had lined up to slam its 'rude' staff and its noisy location. So we were braced for the worst.
The reality was different. Staff welcomed us in good English and were polite and efficient. The hotel lobby has a Seventies wood colour to it that makes it dark and uninviting, however the rooms have been refurbished and are bright and clean. Ours had a good size balcony, minibar, table and chairs. The only downside was the shower, which squeeked and moaned before pumping out its water. Time for an overhaul there, guys.
Breakfast is included and is one of the highlights. From 6am-10.30pm you can choose from cornflakes, fruit, a choice of bread, ham, sausages, egg and a handful of Thai dishes. If you do over-indulge, there's a large pool outside to burn off those calories. Other facilities include a coffee shop, massage service and internet access.
The hotel is set on a separate road, set just back from Second Road, so we're not sure what the comments about noise refered to either.
In the same area is its sister hotel, aptly-named the Royal Twin. The hotels may not be plush or funky, but if you don't mind a slightly aging feel, the Royal Palace Hotel is in a good location, comes with breakfast and parking and big rooms. And, when the price is under 1,500B, that's good enough for us.
