1 Thais are shy
You may have seen more anatomy during a night in Pattaya then you’d see on a nudist beach, but that doesn’t mean everyone is a flesh merchant. If you want to meet someone who doesn’t work in the bars then drop those jokes about ping-pong balls and don’t ask to see their tattoos.

2 Strength in numbers
A Thai girl may well bring along a friend on a first date. This isn’t because they well want a free lunch, but rather as they want to feel secure and comfortable. They’re also bound to quiz their mate after you’ve gone, so be sure to charm the companion as well.

3 Expect to pay
Thailand is a pretty patriarchal society (polygamy was only outlawed 100 or so years ago). Girls tend to act like girls and men tend to act like men, with the notable exception of Boyztown. This traditional approach extends to dating etiquette, where the guy pays. Some ladies are catching onto Western trends and insist on paying their way – but don’t expect them too.

4 Traditional values
Traditional values remain strong in Thai society too, so unmarried mothers, shouting and feet on the table are still taboo.

5 No public petting
Yes, yes, we know you’ve seen couples kissing but you probably haven’t noticed the stares that follow them down the street. What goes in the darkness of Soi Six doesn’t go on out in the light of day. We can hear you scoffing but believe us, a ‘good’ girl won’t do more than hold hands in public.
